Since
Mary Frances Cunningham walked the streets of West Baltimore
and sat on the steps of St. Martin's Parish, Mission Helpers
have traveled the highways and byways of the United States,
Puerto Rico and Venezuela. These women of vision reached
out to those in need by serving the economically poor and
marginalized of the time. Today, the sisters continue this
Mission through religious education, parish administration
and pastoral ministry.
The
Mission Helpers are Women of Reflection taking to heart
the concern of Christ. Mission Helpers endeavor to reflect
Christ's simplicity of life, spirit of gentleness and humility,
zeal, and compassionate love. Convinced of our call to be
messengers of hope and joy in our times, we recognize our
need to develop in ourselves a deep personal love of Jesus,
to inspire and strengthen us in a life of self giving, and
to accept generously the sacrifices that are integral to
our call to holiness and our mission to love.
In the Words of Matthew's Gospel "Come... take for
your heritage the kingdom prepared for you since the foundation
of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food; I was
thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you
made me welcome; sick and you visited me; in prison and
you came to see me." Matthew 25:34 - 36
In
the tradition of our pioneer Sisters, the Mission Helpers
strive to develop their relationship with God through community
prayer, reflection and private prayer of quiet and contemplation.
We come together to be about something bigger than ourselves.
It is in the stillness of the heart that each Sister nourishes
the invitation to listen to the cry of the voiceless. Mission
Helpers share their gift of prayer with their brothers and
Sisters in countless ways: in the Hermitage of Altamonte
Springs, Florida the long retreat inspired by Saint Ignatius
Loyola is offered yearly; in Baltimore, Days of Prayer and
Reflection are scheduled at our Center throughout the liturgical
year, as well as, Scripture Sessions such as "Women
in the Bible"; special attention is focused on young
people's spirituality and their "God Quest".
Aware of the unity of body and soul, Mission Helpers also
share the gift of holistic therapy through healing massage
invoking the presence of Christ, the Healer. Please contact
the Mission Helper Sister in your local area to ask about
opportunities for spiritual direction, prayer days, and
other invitations for spiritual growth.
As
Mission Helpers of the Sacred Heart, we believe that prayer
is central to our call of holiness and service. In prayer
led by the Spirit, we move inward to discover and become
one with the God in whom we live. We believe that as we
deepen our inner life the concerns of Christ's heart become
our own.
We would invite you to share the prayers of your heart,
so that we may pray with you. Please enter your prayer request
on the contact form and we will post them on this page so
that all who visit this site may hold your prayers in their
hearts.
Today
the Mission Helpers continue to be women of conscience,
who in times of unemployment, homelessness and violence,
especially against women and children, care deeply enough
to direct their gifts as counselors and advocates to hurting
individuals and families.
The Mission Helpers' concern for family life has been evidenced
throughout the history of the Congregation. They recognize
that family life is a key not only to faith, but to healthy
living. Many turn to the Sisters for help in a crisis or
for long term counseling. The Mission Helpers link people
to appropriate services since their goal is to empower people
to care for themselves and one another. The legacy of responding
to the alienated, immigrant, neglected and marginalized
is alive and well today.
From the
beginning to the present time, a primary ministry of the
Mission Helpers has been to spread the Word of God
and to teach, by questioning and searching more deeply the
Gospel message. Historically, Mission Helpers have referred
to this process as evangelization and catechesis.
Mission Helpers teach and spread the Word of God today
by ministering in high schools and colleges as campus ministers
and in educational settings as teachers, tutors, mentors,
professors and other teaching professionals.
Mission
Helpers have a long history of drawing upon the technology
of telecommunications and advances in the electronic and
audio-visual fields as part of its outreach efforts. Mission
Helpers continue to recognize the effectiveness of the internet
for interactive distance education, especially faith formation.
In addition, Mission Helper Productions, Inc., a full
service, nonprofit, video production house creates documentaries,
training tapes and organizational videos for companies,
institutions and other socially concerned nonprofits.
As with the information shared through our website, the
Mission Helper's telecommunication ministry is intended
to enhance faith, peace and justice in the 21st Century.
"Open
to the Spirit, we try to discern the course of our ministry
in changing times. We seek to revitalize our present ministry
and discover new directions." (MHSH Directory 3.1)
Mission Helpers are Women of Expression who believe in
and strive to develop in ourselves a holistic life style
which includes spirituality of body, mind and spirit.
This expression of our holistic life style continues to
be woven through the prayerful outreach of healing touch
and artistic ministries of inspirational music, the visual
arts and all forms of creative gifts.
